SQL & IFS
SQL is great for accessing data located in a relational database. But in a modern world it is also necessary to consume data that is located in the IFS (Integrated File System) or provided by web services
With each Technology Refresh IBM introduces and enhances Db2 for i Services. With Release 7.4 Technology Refresh 3 IBM provides new SQL Stored Procedures for reading data from and writing Data into the IFS.
In composition with other SQL Functions it is easy to scan through IFS files or decompose *.csv files or JSON files or XML documents located in the IFS.

Generating and Consuming JSON with SQL
Abstract:
JSON (Java Script Online Notation) is a data exchange format like XML, however JSON is simpler, less verbose and can be faster parsed than XML. In this way JSON becomes more and more important especially when data is exchanged by RESTful web services. The use of XML declines in favor of JSON.
With Release 7.3 TR 3 scalar and aggregate functions were integrated into SQL on Db2 for i, for generating JSON objects, arrays, literals and for combining JSON components into complete hierarchical JSON-documents. Since 7.5 TR 1 it is even possible to modify/update JSON Documents/Data
With the JSON_TABLE table function on the other hand JSON documents can be parsed, converted into a relational representation and data picked specifically out. Additional scalar functions allow SQL to directly access JSON documents located within the IFS (Integrated File System) or in source physical file members.
Last but not least IBM provides SQL http-functions for getting access to web services. In composition with the JSON_TABLE function the JSON answers returned by web services can be consumed within a SELECT-Statement.
Learning Objectives:
Get an introduction into JSON basics. Learn how JSON object and arrays can be generated, concatenated or nested and composed into JSON documents.
Discover how JSON documents located in either the IFS or a column of a table or JSON answers returned by web services can be parsed with the JSON_TABLE table function, converted into a relational representation and data specifically selected.
You’ll also get an overview over the new http-functions and how to use them for getting access to web services.

Audience: Developers and Users who are experienced in SQL Queries and want to create JSON data with SQL.
Developers and Users who need to process JSON documents located in either SQL tables or the IFS or JSON answers returned by web services.
Everybody who simply wants to enhance his SQL know-how.

Things i Love about IBM i 7.5
In this session, I will give you a rundown of some of the new features that I personally love in IBM i 7.5 . IBM i 7.5 is new to us all but I'm one of the lucky few who have been using this new version for a little while as part of the Early Ship Test Program.

So, I will share some of the things that I really like about this new release and explain how they might be useful to you. I'll also share my experience of installing it, upgrading to it and patching it.

Some of these new functions are big, some small but all are beneficial. Even if you are not in a position to upgrade to IBM i 7.5 right now, many have been PTF'd back to 7.4 and some 7.3 so they are still worth knowing about.

Agile Software development including Open Source tools
In this session, i will speak about agile software development processes using excellent open source tools like iSphere, iRPGUnit and RapidFire.
The iSphere project is very popular at IBM I Community and is downloaded more than 600,000 times until now.  It is an easily installable plugin for RDi and adds over thirty much-needed features that improve developer experience significantly. In this presentation, I will showcase some of the most useful features of the project.
Testing is the most important necessity before deploying new features on IBM I.  But this takes a lot of time and almost all developers don’t like this process very much. Open Source project iRPGUnit helps you to integrate automatic Unit testing components to check, if the predefined expected result matches with your software modification. To avoid big problems in production, iRPGUnit will help you to check your programs before deployment.
Installing big database changes on production boxes is also a very critical mission.  Most developers avoid this using some other strange fields in existing databases, who are not really designed for this behavior. Automating IBM i IFS & Network Security with TGSecurity Suite
Business-critical data on IBM i is not immune to ransomware, cybercrimes, and data theft. Key areas of exposure include the files and directories in your IFS and network connectivity such as ODBC, FTP, web server applications and other socket connections.

A lack of skilled resources and security knowledge has left many companies vulnerable to attack. With the average
ransomware breach costing $4.62M, companies can no longer afford NOT to prioritize security by implementing better system configuration and corrective measures.

Leading IBM i security expert Alan Hamm dives into IFS and network security to help you learn how to configure the defenses on your IBM i system and guard your valuable data with the TGSecurity Suite.

In this session, you will learn how to:

- Uncover potential internal/external threats and vulnerabilities
- Secure your IFS from ransomware and cybercrime
- Protect access to your IBM i: Advanced exit point security with TGSecurity Suite

How AI Drives the Future of IBM I Modernization
If you’ve spent any time online in the last few months, you likely saw the buzz around ChatGPT, a new chatbot developed by OpenAI. Suddenly, the capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) are democratized, their insights and guidance no longer exclusively available for data scientists. While the breadth and depth are unclear, it is certain they will have an impact for years to come.
The IBM® i is no exception. AI/ML will play a pivotal role in providing IBM i leaders the information, insight, and recommendations as to how best to optimize and modernize their IBM i environments.

Join Rocket Software’s Marc Paats, Principal Sales Engineer, for a future-facing discussion about AI, ML, and IBM i strategy. In this session, we will talk about the data you should collect today to provide the dataset for the next generation of AI/ML experience tomorrow. In addition, we’ll discuss different touch points for consideration, including:

I never thought of THAT, so I DO need HA!
You've build a nice secure and reliable data center.  You added backup power, redundant cooling, locks with bio-metric validation and so much more. You are confident that you've thought of everything.
That would be incorrect.
Come and see a long list of things that went wrong in data centers from small to large, every one of which brought processing to a dead halt, and often for an extended time.  These are all real events most which I witnessed or worked on the aftermath. Each of them will make you wonder if that could happen to You! Alternatively, you may think of, or perhaps admit to, a unique potential disaster in your data center.
This is't an HA session, you will only learn WHY!

How healthy is your IBM i?
We all know our favourite system is a tough cookie, it soldiers on day in day out with little support from us but how can you actually tell how healthy it really is?
In this session, we run you through a series of simple ideas that you can take away and try on your system. They will not only help you quickly gauge the current health of your system but also allow you to track changes in behavior and help you to detect changes early and plan your future needs with confidence. In most cases we find that following these simple steps will not only improve the performance of your server but extend it's working life and reduce the need for upgrades.

Application Development with Futurization in Mind!
Stop waiting to start your futurization journey. Analysis prior to taking action in a transformation initiative is smart, but many get caught in analysis paralysis. As you determine long-term vision, you can simultaneously take smaller steps toward modernization that will support any end-objective. Join us for the session to explore starting your journey NOW without risking any futurization goals.

This session is for business executives, and focuses on business value that is created when modernizing in a phased approach. We will not get into programming details, but stay focused on business drivers and demands, and how IT can support the business objectives while "keeping the lights on" with their current workload.

This session will cover:
1.) When to consider open-source over the RPG language, and how to get going
2.) Getting buy-in to a modernization initiative by your RPG programmers, allowing them to engage, participate, and contribute to the journey while collaborating with people with differing skillsets.
3.) When you should consider a new package (with integration) vs. packages vs code or database transformation
4.) Aligning Business and IT to have a common goal, utilizing the best of both resources to ensure success.

Demystify PASE
In this presentation Kerim will show how to correctly set up the IFS including Bash, SSH, and more to fully utilize PASE for i and its access to amazing software.

The overall goal will be to acquire a confident familiarity with PASE and improve one’s productivity when working with it. Topics will include:

How to
- set up PASE
- *correctly* set up SSH
- set up and customize our shell
- using yum and open source technologies such as Node.js, Python, and Bash

PASE for i provides an integrated runtime environment that allows you to run portable software including many open source tools, such as Node.js, Python, and Bash. Unfortunately, setting up PASE and one's shell can be a tricky and daunting task, often causing developers to stick with 'QSH' or 'QP2TERM' whenever they intend to access the IFS.

On top of that, the AIX subsystem is a familiar concept for many developers outside of the IBM i world due its similarities to Linux and macOS and as such can be used to lower the barrier to entry for new IBM i developers.

In many cases them building the suggested index or analysis things using some tools may not be the right answer. The problem-solving might simply require a totally different approach.

Build a Phenomenal Web App on IBM i in Under 10 Minutes — No Coding Required!
The Valence Framework for IBM i, available for free download, includes a browser-based low-code development utility called Nitro App Builder (NAB), through which anyone with a solid understanding of their IBM i database can create dazzling web or mobile apps, including dashboards and data grids with download-to-Excel functionality, all in a matter of minutes! Running entirely on IBM i, the NAB tool can also be used to create intricate file maintenance apps, through which users can adjust content in one or more physical files — you control which fields they can see and/or edit.

All of this can be achieved with no coding, though IBM i developers can easily extend the app's functionality with RPG or SQL code to handle business logic as needed. Advanced programmers comfortable with HTML5 and JavaScript code can take things even further, creating super elaborate data-entry apps that work hand-in-hand with server-side RPG logic through the Valence Portal.

The bottom line:  With Valence, whether you're a seasoned RPG developer or a super user with intimate knowledge of your system's physical files, you can crank out highly functional web and mobile apps on IBM i in no time — no prior experience in web or mobile development required. Come to this quick demo session to see the latest release of the Valence framework, and how easy it is to quickly build and deploy such an app on your system.

How to Introduce Modern Development Tools Successfully
Modernizing applications is a top concern of IBM i customers. Business must react quickly to new and fast-changing requirements or lose their competitive advantage.

Our customers tell us that the drive to produce higher quality code in less time is forcing them to rethink their development strategies. The prediction that there will be almost no RPG skills available by 2030 is leaving IT managers quaking in their boots. The acknowledged solution to this problem includes standardizing on a common development toolset across all platforms. This is not new, and IBM i development teams have been talking about it for years. With new supporting technologies from DevOps solution vendors, the time has come to stop talking and start acting! But how do you move past the conversation?

Learning Objectives:
• How other IBM i customers are approaching this challenge
• How to evolve your development process into the future whilst still running your business
• How are existing DevOps vendors supporting new technologies?

Group By, Having and multi-dimensional Grouping
An SQL SELECT can be much more than a simple SELECT * FROM query. Among others it includes with the GROUP BY clause a powerful data aggregation capability. A bunch of aggregate functions allows to count or summarize rows, to calculate the average over multiple rows, to determine the minimum and maximum row value. The GROUP BY clause may be widely known and used, but the HAVING clause which goes hand in hand with the GROUP BY is often a mystery. There may be other secrets waiting for being revealed … or did you know you can create all kinds of sub-totals and grand-total with an SQL GROUP BY?

Learning Objectives:
In this session you’ll learn the basic use of the GROUP BY and HAVING clauses as well as the use of multiple aggregate functions. You’ll also discover how NULL values can affect the result returned by aggregate functions. It will be demonstrated how easily all kinds of sub-totals and grand-totals can be built. You’ll also learn how to use the CASE clause for building pivot tables.

The latest trend of IBM i in Japan
Japan has been one of the country which has a lot of IBM i users for 30 years. And there are still new IBM i users in Japan every year. Many IBM i users will continue to use IBM i to support their core business

The use of IBM i has evolved over a long period of time, and in the past two years, a new trend of the cloud era has come to the IBM i world at once. In particular, REST-API and Power Virtual Server are two epoch-making technologies, and advanced client references are increasing.

We left IBM after 10 years of working for IBM, which created the opportunity for us to become IBM i fans, and joined OmniScience to launch a service that combines cloud computing and IBM i. Through our experiences at IBM and OmniScience, we would like to introduce the trend of IBM i in Japan in the cloud era and some customer case studies.

Time for change?
Many things have changed since June 1988: music, clothes, the way we have relationships with others…
but... did you change the way you use IBM i? Should IBM push you to do it? The platform Paradigma has been always to be able to run "old code" but this comes with a price:
"technical debt". The platform is as modern or old as the way we use it. Should IBM change this paradigma and start deprecating old features?
I even asked chatGPT about it! Can we make IBM i a valid and simpler alternative to the complex Kubernetes?
